Coupang's Fulfillment Center in Riverside, California is staffed by hundreds of employees and serves as the heart of our U.S. Cross Border Trade operation. Senior Program Manager, Andrew Aguiar, believes the secret to the facility's success today and tomorrow is by developing those around him.

After working in the logistics and warehousing industry for 15 years, Andrew Aguiar was looking for a change.“For me, the biggest thing I was looking for was joining a team with a growth mindset.”

He found what he was seeking with Coupang's team at the Riverside Fulfillment Center (FC) when he joined in November, 2021. Originally hired as a Logistics Manager, he was promoted in 2022 and now oversees 2nd shift FC operations, leading a team of approximately 150 people. He believes the best way to drive the teams' success is by mentoring and developing others. Several employees who have worked for Andrew's team in entry level positions, such as picking or packing, have grown to take on larger roles and more responsibilities with the help of Andrew's coaching.

He holds regular feedback sessions when working with new team members to understand the employee's goals, get a gauge on where they'd like to see themselves in the future and determine how to put a plan in place to help them achieve their goals.

“I recently began working with a team member who wants to step into a management role as part of their career path. We began by going through an analysis of their strengths and areas for improvement. It was critical to share honest and objective feedback and align on where they could improve.”

Working with the employee, Andrew established a plan that provided learning experiences, opportunities to demonstrate additional capabilities, and regular check-ins to discuss progress.

“I believe everyone can impact the company regardless of level. We have high expectations for ourselves to make miracles happen here. And we do that by developing and motivating the team to be their best every day.”

The growth mindset Andrew was seeking when he joined Coupang is something he continues to instill with his team in weekly team meetings, one-on-one sessions and impromptu conversations.

“I always say the Riverside FC is a great place where you can come in and make an impact quickly, but there's an even bigger opportunity to drive significant long-term impact. Everybody sees that opportunity and we challenge ourselves to achieve it by learning and growing every day.”
